Consumers can guarantee that the Venison purchased has come from deer reared to the highest welfare standards.

Welfare and Traceability

Venico's delicious venison comes from pasture reared, suckled herds. All deer are reared on their mother's milk and extensively on grass and clover. If deer are in-wintered to protect them from the elements then accommodation is spacious, with copious amounts of fresh straw.

We never use growth promoters or additives. Deer require minimum veterinary intervention and no pre-emptive medical practices are allowed.

Quality Assurance

QUALITY ASSUREDVenison produced under this logo is Quality Assured (QA); a scheme administered by EFSIS

Deer farmers accredited to the QA scheme follow good husbandry practices, the key elements of which are as follows:-

  • Accountability: An independent audit provides assurance that the deer are reared to the highest standards of welfare and hygiene.
  • Full traceability: Complete records are maintained on farm, throughout transport and during processing.
  • Responsible management: Deer are reared naturally on their mother's milk and at grass, without the use of artificial feed additives or growth promoters.
  • QA Farmed Venison is guaranteed to be lean and tender, without a strong rich flavour.

Nutrition

No longer meat for the special occasion, farmed venison has now become a real choice ideally suited to the health and culinary demands of today's discerning consumer.Paula Radcliffe

According to the Meat Trades Journal: Earlier in 2004 World Champion runner Paula Radcliffe extolled the virtues of venison, as "the healthiest of red meats, offering high protein yet low fat".Ben Bradshaw

And in December 2003, government Minister Ben Bradshaw was in there as well, saying venison "is a low-fat meat that is full of protein. I eat a lot of game and I love venison".

A recent nationwide survey conducted by the Food Trust of Scotland in 2003, showed that the Scots voted venison as there second preferred choice for a main course, after beef and ahead of lamb, salmon and pork!

As John Fletcher, an eminent Scottish deer vet, said at the British Deer Farmers Annual Conference in 2003, "there aren't many things in life that we can enjoy and which are good for us at the same time!".

Why farmed venison is good for you:

  • Exceptionally good source of iron; it has a higher iron level than other traditional red meats.
  • Lower in fat content and cholesterol than even skinless chicken.
  • Low in saturated fats.
  • High in essential Omega 3 fatty acids (comparable to oily fish).
  • Good source of protein, vitamins and important trace elements.
